IIPC Debate 31 May

IIPC Debate #84

IIPC Visiting Professor Martin Cloonan (University of Glasgow): Fighting the Aliens: The Musicians’ Union and foreign musicians in the age of jazz

Tue May 31, 2-4 pm, Janus Hall (Kaivokatu 12, Turku)

Based on his recent work on the history of the UK’s Musicians’ Union (www.muhistory.com), in this debate Professor Cloonan examines the period between 1935 and 1955 when foreign musicians were “banned” from playing in the UK. The debate talk problematises notions of a ban and suggests the events of over sixty years ago provide lessons for today.

Martin Cloonan is currently Visiting Professor in the IIPC. He has recently been Distinguished Visiting Scholar at UTS, Sydney and is Convenor of Research in Music at the University of Glasgow where he also holds the position of Professor of Popular Music Politics. Professor Cloonan has recently completed work on a jointly written book on the history of the UK’s Musicians’ Union which will be published by Manchester University Press in September.
